Navigating around the site
This site represents the first stage in an ongoing development
process. The menu item that appears grey is not yet active. The active
parts of the site's navigation are the news and events page, discussion
groups pages and the main industry-related links page, together with
a range of links on the left hand side of the screen and the tabs at
the top which lead to Feedback, About us, Help, and Legal stuff. Clicking
on an active link will take you to the relevant section of this site
or to an external site.
Browsers and screen resolution
The site is best viewed at a minimum screen resolution
of 800x600 pixels using a level 4 browser or above, for example, Internet
Explorer 5 or Netscape Navigator 6. You can view the site with a level
3 browser and a lower screen resolution, but the results may be unpredictable.
The best results will be obtained by upgrading your browser to the latest
version and increasing your screen resolution.
Below are links to web sites where you can find a browser suitable for your needs. Most software companies provide notes about how to install their browsers and it's a good idea to read these before downloading and installing the software.
The most common browsers for both Mac and PC can be downloaded free from either Microsoft or Netscape.
Other PC browsers are also available as shareware or freeware. These include Opera, NetCaptor, and NeoPlanet.
Other Mac browsers include iCab, Opera and Omniweb.
Accessibility
Greater control over how web pages look can be gained
by altering the settings within your browser. For example, if you have
a visual impairment that would be helped by a larger font size than the
one currently displayed, you can override the site's settings and select
your own. The same applies to the colour of the type and to the background
colour of the pages. In Netscape the controls are found under the Edit
menu (Edit>Preferences>Appearance>) and in Internet Explorer
under the Tools menu (Tools>Internet Options>General tab). For more
information about the Web and accessibility, visit the World
Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
Please tell us if you have problems with, or comments about, this site's
accessibility. Please use the site's feedback
form.
Portable document format (PDF)
From time to time, Visual Aids Services will offer users
the opportunity to read or download documents in PDF format. If you do
not have Acrobat Reader, you can download it free from
Adobe's website.
Technical errors
If you come across technical errors (error messages, missing
or broken graphics, broken links, etc) please report them via the feedback
form.
When reporting technical errors, try to give as much information as you
can. This will help the technical team to track down, replicate, and then
correct the error. Your e-mail should include the following details:
- the URL (http:// address) of the page on which the error occurs
- the date and time you discovered the error
- the nature of the error and the text of any error message
- the make of your browser and its version number, for example: Internet
Explorer 4.0, Netscape 4.7. (version information is usually found
in a 'help' or 'about' file accessed from the main menu bar of the
browser)
- the type of computer you are using, for example, Mac, PC.
