Welcome to

Visual Aids Services

This site is devoted to airport lighting (visual aids) that are utilized on airports for the purpose of providing, in all weather conditions, visual signals to the pilot that provide an awareness of where the aircraft is on approach to, or on the airport surface. Airport lighting visual aids have light sources that provide a signal to the pilot that must meet a particular light beam output requirement. Proper design, installation and maintenance of lighted visual aids are essential to ensure that the signal to the pilot meets the minimum visual signal requirement. This website will provide history and the most current information pertaining to  airport lighted visual aids located on runways and taxiways. The IES Airport Lighting Committee is embarking on a new venture of collaboration with FAA in order to improve the documents that regulate visual aids. We hope to share with you our progress
